Why It Matters
There are over 400,000 kids in foster care in the United States. This means that about 1 in 184 children in the U.S. are in the foster care system.
There are 5,223 foster kids in the state of Virginia…and right here in the Coastal Virginia area there are 803. Our area makes up 15% of the numbers for state foster care.
The need for more foster families to lighten the load and provide love and care is a great need.
Without a loving family environment, the future for foster youth is dismal. 50% graduate high school, with only 3% going to college. About 25% of former foster youth experience homelessness within four years of leaving the system. In 2012, only 48% of male former foster youth were employed and 50% of females had multiple children of their own by age 20.
Having a loving family environment makes all the difference in the world in the outcome for these kids. One27 aspires to raise awareness for the need for more of these families so we can see kids in care succeed.
